Sixth Form Pastoral

Walking into the ILC, our dedicated Sixth Form study space at the heart of the school, feels distinctly different from the world of GCSEs.

The airy, industrial-style loft space creates a calm, collegiate atmosphere where students are treated as young adults and encouraged to take increasing ownership of their studies, ambitions, and wider school life. There is a strong sense of openness at MVS, not only in the design of the space itself, but also in the relationships between staff and students and in the culture of the Sixth Form community.

At MVS, Sixth Formers are known as individuals. A dedicated team of Personal Tutors, led by the Head of Sixth Form, works closely with students throughout their time in the Sixth Form. Tutors meet students every morning and provide consistent academic and pastoral guidance, ensuring ambitions are supported, concerns are addressed early, and students feel confident navigating the transition into adulthood.

Our diverse and inclusive community is one of the school’s defining strengths. Students from a wide range of backgrounds quickly become part of a friendly and welcoming environment where kindness, tolerance and mutual respect are genuinely valued. Strong relationships across year groups mean younger pupils benefit from the support and guidance of older students.

Relationships between staff and students are mature, respectful, and collaborative. Students are encouraged to contribute ideas, speak openly, and play an active role in shaping school life. Student voice is central to our ethos, with Sixth Formers taking on leadership responsibilities through mentoring, the School Council, clubs, volunteering, and co-curricular activities.

Peer mentoring plays an important role within the Sixth Form community. Our mentoring programme allows Sixth Formers to act as supportive role models for younger pupils, offering encouragement, guidance, and friendship as they settle into school life.

Alongside support from tutors and teachers, students also have access to our on-site School Nurse, ensuring wellbeing remains a priority throughout Sixth Form.

At MVS, pastoral care is embedded in the everyday experience of being part of the school community.
